In this workshop, we will:
Review the basics and theory of light
Review how to read and meter light (and why that’s important)
Review different types of portrait lighting and light modifiers
Recreate natural-looking light with strobe (flash)
Practice a wide variety of lighting setups with a hands-on lighting session.
3 HOUR IN-PERSON WORKSHOP
Walk away feeling confident in knowing how to both read and use studio flash to uplevel your portraits
Understand the principles of light to help shape and control your lighting in any scenario
Combine natural light and studio flash with confidence and ease
Hands-on practice with 1, 2 and 3 light set-ups to build your knowledge base for lighting techniques
Never have to feel panicked or worried you can’t light any room you walk into

1 hour of instruction + review

30-minute lunch
1.5 hours of hands-on lighting practice

YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Jen Allison is a portrait and branding photographer, educator and photography professor based in what is currently known as East York, on the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabewaki, Haudenosaunee, Wendake-Nionwesntisïo, Mississauga peoples.
Jen began her career in the photography industry as a freelance photo assistant to some of Toronto’s best commercial and editorial photographers after graduating from Algonquin College Photography program.
Working with fashion, food, portrait and architectural photographers, Jen learned how to manage and run a photography studio while being mentored on studio and natural lighting techniques, gear, post-production and interpersonal skills with agencies, publications and other industry professionals.
With over 14 years of experience in the professional photography industry, Jen has “seen it all” in terms of lighting scenarios as well as put her knowledge into practice with various clients over the years.
Her approach to photography is centred around storytelling - highlighting the moments you can’t pose and breathing life into the seemingly mundane. She provided space for people to be themselves in front of a camera - she helps people see the world, not through a social media lens, but a lens of compassion and humanity.
She creates emotionally connected moment-driven images with a thoughtful eye and composition.
Jen resides in Toronto with her partner, child and dog and is currently attempting her first Half Ironman triathlon.
